CLERK/CASHIER

FULL AND PART-TIME
REPORTS TO RETAIL SUPERVISOR, STORE MANAGER, ASSISTANT MANAGER, AND OWNER


The Duties and Responsibilities are:


General Management


Observes scheduled shift operating hours at all times, as assigned by the Store Manager.


Performs specific tasks as assigned by the Store Manager in a timely manner, understanding, complying, and enforcing company policies as well as safety regulations, local, state, and federal regulations.


Assists the Store Manager in seeing that the store maintains a store-inspection grade of at least 85% on the store inspection report.


Gives all customers prompt and courteous service and handles customer complaints in a professional and helpful manner.


Follows the work schedule as posted and reports to work on time, unless a change is arranged with Store Manager.


Stays familiar with the Company’s Handbook Policies, and Memos.


Ensures Store Manager is made aware of all sales, cash, or operating discrepancies.


Follows the established dress code and grooming policies of the company.


Operates shift within company guidelines to achieve sales and profit.


Observes for any safety issues and corrects those found that are able to be corrected and inform Store Manager/Owner of such issues.


Bookkeeping


Prepares a shift-change report at the completion of shift in accordance with company guidelines.
Properly clocks in and out to accurately reflect all hours worked.


Notifies Store Manager of any discrepancies in the operating results on the shift report, or cash over/short in excess of $5.00, within 24 hours of shift close.


Assures proper sale and accounting for Lotto/Lottery Tickets during shift.


Assures proper sale and accounting for Tobacco/Cigarettes/Vape during shift.

Understands the cash register functions and rings all sales as directed by Store Manager.


Accurately posts markups and markdowns, store use of merchandise, voids, over-rings and no-sales, any bad-merchandise write-offs, within established guidelines.


Understands and follows established gasoline operations and maintenance.


Personnel


Advises Store Manager of any personnel situations or policy violations having an adverse effect on store operating performance.


Seeks answers and information when questions arise, and documents information on appropriate forms.


Security


Shares the responsibility for controlling the inventory on the shift or in the store.


Follows company policy with regard to excessive cash in registers, change box and safe security, as directed by Store Manager.


Completes a shift-change report at the end of shift as directed by Store Manager.


Follows correct vendor check-in procedures as directed by Store Manager.


Protects company assets at all times.


Recognizes the causes of inventory shrinkage and works effectively to control loss and increase profits.
 
Merchandising


Keeps coolers, drink boxes, store shelves, and displays fully stocked and fronted at all times.


Properly cleans and maintains equipment and readies high-margin products such as coffee, fountain drinks, etc., as directed by Store Manager.


Uses suggestive selling techniques as directed by Store Manager.


Conducts themselves in a professional manner.

 

Displays a positive attitude, speaks highly of the company in the presence of customers or other employees, and keeps all information in the store confidential.


Knows the merchandise which the store carries and is aware of store promotions.  Knows procedures for stocking merchandise.


Maintenance


Understands the importance and implementation of overall store cleanliness, inside and outside.


Keeps store floors clean at all times, with specific responsibility being assigned by the Store Manager.


Checks refrigeration equipment for proper performance a minimum of one time per shift.


Cleans windows, floors, shelving, counters, restrooms and gas pumps to ensure they remain clean at all times.


Immediately advises Store Manager of any maintenance problems.


The Requirements For the Job Are:

Be able to read, understand, and write the English language at the eighth-grade level;


Be able to perform arithmetical calculations at the eighth grade level in order to be able to make change, complete shift reports, and account for numbers of a variety of products during vendor check-in;


Have sufficient visual ability to check identification;
Be able to read and understand instructions for operating electronic cash registers and other equipment;


Be able to lift up to 50 pounds, carrying cases of milk cartons and soft drinks and juice containers, etc. at least once per shift;


Be able to stock shelves and coolers;


Be able to react to a fire by lifting a fire extinguisher weighing 10-20 pounds and moving it to the fire area;


Be able to bend in order to pull up a metal plate weighing 20 pounds;


Be able to tolerate exposure to gasoline fumes and cleaning products;


Be able to climb a ladder to clean windows and to change light bulbs;


Be able to speak and understand English, including the ability to hear the spoken word;


Be able to sweep and mop floors, dust shelves, and lift and carry out trash containers and place in an outside bin;


Be able to clean the parking lot and grounds surrounding the convenience store;


Be able to enter and work in a cooler at a temperature of 33 to 45 degrees up to 30 to 60 minutes at a time.


Be able to stand during shift, to bend, stretch, and squat.

ASSISTANT / STORE MANAGER

The Duties and Responsibilities are (in addition to Clerk/Cashier):


Employee Relations


Processes required employee information and paperwork on a daily basis.


Proper work scheduling and use of allocated hours when required.


Supervises employees in a fair, consistent and impartial way in accordance with E.E.O. guidelines.
 

Ensures compliance with company dress codes in areas of personal appearance, cleanliness, and uniforms for themselves and store employees.


Promotes teamwork between store employees, supervision and staff.


Delegates tasks to responsible personnel.


Conducts themselves in a professional manner, speaking highly of the company in the presence of other employees, vendors, and customers.
 

Communications


Be available for “on call” and have direct access to a telephone at all times.


Relays information from manager or supervisor to all store employees.


Advises manager or supervisor of significant events affecting the store and documents events by completing and filing incident reports.


Keeps all store information confidential.


Accounting


Operates the cash register accurately and according to company policy.


Prepares and/or assures that bank deposits are made according to company policy.


Prepares and/or assures that all accounting records are completed accurately and on a timely basis.


Controls company funds:
Expenses
Cash
Inventory
Equipment/Supplies
Money Orders
Lottery Tickets
Tank Inventories.


Merchandising


Orders merchandise and maintains proper gross profits


Checks competition prices


Maintains build to sheets


Ensures that correct pricing is maintained and that merchandise is rotated, clean and in date code.


Is aware of and assists with all promotions according to the marketing planner, displaying advertising material, window banners and displays
on a timely basis.


If applicable, understands pizza and/or fast food operations.


Customer Relations


Assures that each customer receives prompt and courteous service


Handles customer complaints in a professional and helpful manner.


Uses suggestive selling to improve sales.


Store Conditions


Maintain Hometown Convenience Store’s high standard of housekeeping.


Ensures that each shift maintains store cleanliness and that equipment maintenance meets company standards.


Security


Follows company policies to ensure against loss of money or merchandise.


Maintains control to ensure proper use of all store keys, safe combinations and equipment passwords.
 

Physical Requirements


Must be able to stand during shift, to bend, stoop, squat, and twist.


Must be able to lift 50 lbs. when moving merchandise, such as fountain syrup, CO2 tanks, or when emptying trash containers.


Must be able to climb a ladder to change light bulbs and gas price signs.


Hours of Work:


Must be available for on-call duty in the event of an emergency.


Assistant Managers will be scheduled so that they are aware of conditions occurring on all shifts.


Assistant Managers will work a shift other than when the manager is scheduled. Exceptions to this could be for shifts where a grocery truck delivery is being made or for training a new employee.


Government Regulations


Assures understanding and compliance of all store employees of Federal, State, and Local Regulations.

Be able to speak and understand English, including the ability to hear the spoken word;


Be able to sweep and mop floors, dust shelves, and lift and carry out trash containers and place in an outside bin;

Be able to enter and work in a cooler at a temperature of 35 to 45 degrees up to 30 to 60 minutes at a time;


Be able to stand during shift, to bend, stretch, and squat;


Be 21 years of age or older when working in a store which holds a liquor license.
